Reading food labels is a great way to become a more informed consumer and can help you make healthier choices. Unfortunately, it’s not always the easiest thing to do when you’re uninformed. I know how overwhelming it can be walking into a store with hundreds of products surrounding you, each claiming to be the best, not realizing they contain crappy ingredients or simply from false advertisements. The good news is it doesn’t have to be overwhelming and is fairly easy to master once you get the hang of it! And for that reason, I’m going to go over a few ways how you can read a food label like a pro!

What is a Food Label?

A food label is attached to a food product that contains valuable information about the product, including the ingredients, nutrition information, and any health claims or warnings. Food labels are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States and are designed to help consumers make informed decisions about what they eat.

Why is Reading Food Labels Important?

First and foremost, it helps you make informed decisions about what you eat. By understanding the ingredients and nutrition information on a food label, you can choose foods that are healthier and better suited to your needs. Additionally, food labels can help you avoid allergens and other ingredients that you may want to avoid.

Food labels can also help you manage your weight and maintain a healthy heart. By understanding the serving size, calorie information, sodium, and cholesterol intake on a food label, you can ensure you’re consuming the right amount of food to meet your needs and not exceed your daily value recommendation.

Finally, understanding how to read a food label can help you make informed choices about food products that make health claims. For example, a food product that claims to be low-fat must meet specific standards that are set by the FDA. By understanding what these claims mean, you can make sure you’re getting exactly that.

What Information Can You Find on a Food Label?

Food labels contain a wealth of information about a food product. Some of the most valuable information you can find on a food label includes:

  • Serving size: This is important for you to understand how much of a product you’re consuming.
  • Nutrition facts: This section will tell you how many calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals, etc. are in each serving.
  • Ingredients list: This section will tell you what is in the product in order of greatest to least in weight. Unfortunately, there are products out there that claim to be healthy when in reality, the ingredients list can reveal additives, food dyes/flavors, preservatives, and more. It’s important to take an extra few moments at the store to read over the ingredients list to confirm there aren’t any hidden ingredients. *Best rule of thumb, if there are more than 8 ingredients or you can’t pronounce them, you should probably think twice before consuming it.
  • Health claims: If the label claims that a product is low in fat or high in fiber, make sure to read the nutrition facts to confirm this.
  • Daily Value: The Daily Value (DV) is the amount of a specific nutrient that’s recommended for a daily diet. This information can help you understand how a particular food product fits into your overall diet.
  • Added sugars: Sugar is often added to foods, so it’s important to check for this on the label and how much is being added to a product so you can keep your added sugar intake down.

Take Aways

Remember, you are in control of what you consume. Understanding how to read food labels is crucial for being a responsible and informed consumer. By taking the time to understand the information on food labels, you can make healthier and more informed choices about what you eat. Hopefully, by using these tips and taking some extra time to see what is in the food you plan on consuming, you can make more informed choices about the food you buy for yourself and your loved ones.
